Bodyscapes of the Chromatic Borderland: A Walking Inquiry | 2025

This work presents a series of walks as a process-oriented artistic investigation. Situated in the semi-desert of southern Georgia, a region defined by its vibrant, mineral-streaked mountains and its precarious position on the border with Azerbaijan, the project employs walking art as a core methodology. It is a practice aimed at unsettling anthropocentric perspectives and engaging with the world through a posthuman and phenomenological lens.
The landscape itself is a primary agent in this research. The spectacular chromatic ridges are not a static backdrop but a dynamic archive of deep time. Formed from mineral-rich sedimentary rocks—sandstone and siltstone—their vivid hues are a direct expression of elemental forces. The reds and yellows whisper of iron oxides, the greens of chlorite, minerals deposited when this arid expanse lay beneath an ancient sea. Uplifted by tectonic shifts and sculpted by millennia of erosion, the terrain is a testament to a planet in constant, violent, and beautiful becoming. To walk here is to traverse a living geology.
This walking journey is framed through the notion of ‘bodyscapes.’ This concept seeks to dissolve the rigid boundaries between the human body and the geological body, the political line and the ecological flow. The walking body is not a sovereign subject moving across a landscape, but a porous, sensing entity entangled within a multi-species ecology. The dust of oxidized minerals coats the skin; the rhythm of footfall echoes the slow, grinding pace of tectonic plates; the political boundary is felt not as a line on a map, but as a visceral presence, a tension in the air. The body becomes a landscape—a bodyscape—and the landscape becomes a body, each imprinted upon the other.

The work embraces walking as a methodology for post-human phenomenological research. It is an act of receptive attention to the more-than-human world—to the wind, the stone, the thorny brush, and the unseen lives that inhabit this zone. This is a phenomenology not of human consciousness alone, but of the intermingling of agencies. The path is not predetermined but emerges step-by-step through a collaborative negotiation between the walker’s intent, the lay of the land, and the myriad non-human forces at play - unexpected encounters with sheepdogs rearrange the route.
Depicting this emergent quality, the project documentation includes sketch-drawings featuring arrow diagrams. These are not maps of routes taken, but visual notations of potentialities - representing possible paths, decisions, and alternatives encountered in the field. They diagram the very process of navigation and the ever-present potential for the journey to unfold differently, embodying the contingent and relational nature of this inquiry.
By moving through this chromatic borderland, this work asks: How can we conceptualize bodies as entangled materialities, inseparable from the geologic and the political? In the becoming of bodyscapes, we find a methodology for sensing the profound, material entanglement of life, stone, and the lines we draw upon the Earth.
